The Libyan Peace Institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation to advance reconciliation and societal stability. The signing in Tokyo on January 22, 2025, marks a significant step towards collaborative action, focusing on capacity building and knowledge exchange.

On January 22, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Libyan Peace Institute and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation. The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Abdullah Al-Lafi, Deputy of the Libyan Presidential Council. Representing the Libyan Peace Institute was its President, Mr. Abduallah Hamed, while the Sasakawa Peace Foundation was represented by its President, Mr. Atsushi Sunami.


The MOU establishes a framework for joint cooperation between the two institutions to promote reconciliation, peace, and comprehensive, sustainable development. It aims to launch targeted initiatives to achieve peace and societal stability by identifying specific areas of collaboration. These areas include training Libyans in facilitation, mediation, and peacebuilding; conducting joint workshops to facilitate knowledge transfer and share lessons learned from reconciliation efforts in Asia and Libya; and undertaking related research and studies.


This MOU is the result of several technical meetings between specialists from both institutions, during which joint projects were discussed. The specific details of these projects will be finalized and implementation will commence in the coming days.


The Libyan Peace Institute, a research institution focused on peacebuilding and providing technical support for the national reconciliation project, seeks to leverage international experiences and share lessons learned from the Libyan context. By building partnerships with leading international institutions, the Institute aims to enhance its capacity and achieve its objectives. It is committed to cooperating with all parties and institutions involved in Libyan public affairs.
